Nanotechnology meets genomics

Quantum dot (QD) encoded microspheres, through harnessing the inherent optical advantages of semiconductor nanocrystals show much potential for identification of biomolecules in vitro, QD microspheres consist of various sizes of QDs at different concentrations (various intensities) polymerised within a latex or polystyrene bead, yielding potentially thousands of unique spectral ‘barcodes’. A target specific probe such as an oligonucleotide or cDNA sequence may be attached to the QD microsphere for applications such as single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping and gene expression analysis.
